VMware Horizon 6.1 – What’s New

VMware Horizon 6.1 has been released a week ago, providing a bunch of new features and full support of vSphere 6.0. Here is a list with the main improvements of the new version of the VMware VDI solution:

• NVIDIA GRID vGPU (shared GPU hardware acceleration)
• Smart Card for RDS desktops and Hosted Apps
• Support for IPv6 networks
• Support for Virtual SAN 6.0
• Support for Virtual Volumes
• View Administrator (UI) support for configuring Cloud Pod Architecture
• USB Redirection of mass storage on RDS desktops and Hosted Apps
• Windows Server 2012 R2 operating system support for VDI desktops.
• 3rd-Party SSO credential handling
• Enhanced Message Security Mode
• vSphere Transparent Page Sharing in Horizon 6
• Virtual hardware version 11 graphics memory configuration
• ViewDbChk utility to resolve database inconsistencies for Horizon 6 virtual machines
• Supportability of Windows XP and Windows Vista guest operating systems as desktop virtual machines

In our future post we will go through some of the new features in more details.

It is important to know that if you want to install and test the newest version of Horizon, you will NOT find it on the same download location where Horizon (View) 6.0 was, but there is a new location named just Horizon 6. Looks like slowly the View will disappear from the product name and it will be named just Horizon in the future.

One more interesting feature which I want to share with you in advance is the new UI section in View Administrator, which allow you to configure the Cloud Pod. In Horizon View 6.0 it was possible only through the command line.
