Part 3 | Installing VMware Horizon View 5.x Security Server – Step-by-Step guide

A security server is an instance of View Connection Server that adds an additional layer of security between the Internet and your internal network

The View Security Server must be paired with a View Connection Server which is part of your View Pod in order to be able to get the security benefits providing by it. The number of the Security Servers depends on your Pod design, but the recommended minimum is two if you your aim is to create a high available and/or load balanced security servers farm.

The Hardware and Software requirements are the same as the Connection/Replica servers described in the previous articles of the VMware Horizon View series. You can find them in Table.1 and Table.2 or at the VMware View documentation page

Let’s begin with the installation

First of all you must have downloaded the installation media accessible from the View CS server. If you do not have it, you can download it from the VMware download page

1. Run the View Connection installer.

In our case we are going to use VMware-viewconnectionserver-x86_64-5.2.0-987719, but the guide is compatible also with installation of View 5.3.x and to some extends to VMware Horizon View 6.x.

2. Welcome Wizard where you can verify the version which you are going to install.Click Next to continue…
3. License Agreement. Read and select I accept to continue and click Next
4. Select the destination folder for the installation. We recommend to use the default unless you don’t have a good reason not to. Click Next to continue…
5. Select the View Security Server option and click Next to continue …
6. Now you must type the hostname or the IP address of the View Connection Server which will be paired to the Security Server which we are installing now. Click Next to continue…
7. The next step in the installation is to prepare the View Connection Server for pairing with the Security Server. This should be done through the View Administrator interface. It can be accessed from the https://ViewCS_address/admin Once you login to the portal navigate to View Configuration ->Servers->Connection Servers -> Choose the destination server and click More Commands -> Specify Security Server Pairing Password
8. Type the password two times and select the desired timeout. If you plan to continue the Security Server Installation later, you can select a longer timeout. 30 minutes by default are enough to satisfy the most use cases.
9. Let’s go back the Security Server Installation and enter the paring password. Click Next to continue…
10. At this step you can check and change the used URLs for the different types of connections. Just one note here – PcoIP External URL must be IP address not an hostname.If the default choices satisfy your requirements, click Next to continue …
11. If you do not want to configure the OS firewall manually after the installation, you can let the installer to configure it automatically for you. Once you make your choice click Next to continue….
12. The last step before the installation begins is to confirm by clicking Install…

If the installation is successful you must get screen like that

Once the installation has completed you should be able to see the Security Server in the View Administrator interface (View Configuration -> Servers -> Security Servers) Clicking the Edit button you will have the option to change the Security Server settings which we setup during the installation.
